Presidential Astrology: Edwards for Vice President?

Date: 2004-07-07   By:  Stephanie Jean Clement, Ph.D.

If you read the New York Post, you probably think Dick Gephardt is Kerry’s choice for vice president. Oops! The Post had a splashy headline that recalls an issue of the Chicago Tribune over fifty years ago, when Thomas Dewey was declared the winner in his presidential race against Truman.

Actually, on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, John Kerry announced his choice of John Edwards to be his running mate in the 2004 presidential election campaign.

Astrologically, Edwards is a strong choice. His chart shows him to be more self-contained than Kerry. Edwards definitely has his own career in mind, but he also likes each life experience to turn out comfortably. He achieves this through seeking balance and by weighing the material facts against a mental or spiritual information base. These qualities have served him well as a trial lawyer and will continue to aid him in his career.

Edwards has great intuition into situations and this worked for him in the presidential campaign. He is capable of surprising everyone, but he knows that most people don’t like surprises.

Edwards is a self-directed personality type. This complements Kerry’s more responsive style. Kerry’s Sun in Sagittarius reflects an intuitive style, and Edwards brings the Gemini thinking style to the mix. This fits well with Kerry’s Gemini Moon. There are numerous relationships between their charts to confirm that these two men can work together as a strong team.

Job Change in November?
Edwards has very positive astrological configurations around the time of the election. His emotional state will be strong and balanced. This year has him at his mental best, with an inquisitive mind, a knack for quick thinking, and the ability to communicate his ideas clearly to different audiences. He is certainly ready for the challenge of the vice presidency and he is also up to the rigorous demands of the campaign. Here is a partial list of astrological indicators that he may be elected:

• Solar arc Uranus (often associated with elections) square (indicates change) birth Jupiter (associated in Edwards’ chart with work environment)
• Solar arc Moon (emotions) trine (relaxed condition) birth Midheaven (career and status), indicating he will be pleased with the results
• Progressed Moon (personal connection to events) opposition (awareness) birth Neptune (career indicator) is just past, indicating his dropping out of the presidential race
• Progressed Jupiter (good fortune) conjunct (prominence) birth Sun (the individual), indicating advancement in life recognition, creative power, and success

This grouping of indicators is very positive. There are some indicators that are less positive, reflecting the stresses of the campaign and Edwards’ need to adjust his career goals:

• Solar arc Ascendant (personality) semisquare (tension) birth Uranus (election indicator)
• Transiting Neptune (career indicator for Edwards) sesquisquare (agitation and stress) Mars (connected to Aries in the Tenth House of career)
• Transiting Mars (career indicator) quincunx (adjustment) birth Midheaven (career and status)
• Transiting Mercury (news) quincunx (adjustments) birth Mars (career indicator)

On the positive side, these could indicate the demands of moving his office and taking on a new set of responsibilities. On the less positive side, they could indicate adjustment to news that he has lost the election.

This listing of astrological indicators is far from complete. However, it does show us the range of possibilities for John Edwards in the coming campaign and election.
